Work, life and things in between – Day 32: Quebec City!

Work, life and things in between – Day 32: Quebec City!

This entire week is supposed to be dedicated to visiting friends in Quebec City. That was the original plan. Thanks to furniture delivery schedule and other related tasks, I am unable to leave until noon today.  I finally get on the road and it is a pleasant drive.

I stop to visit a friend on the North shore, in the town where I used to live, and stay for an hour or so.  Even though I left five (5) years ago, very little seems to have changed.  What a contrast to my world that has been anything but stationary.

Here is an interesting thought.  Where change is often uncomfortable and always challenging for many, lack of change is boring and somewhat tiring.  Who wants to hang around a place that stands still?

I drive by the home I used to own.  I see that the lawn has continued to grow green and healthy and the apple tree is taller.  The neighbors seem to be the same. Time seems to have stood still.  Even my living room curtains are still hanging in the front window.

I finally get to Quebec City on time for dinner.  I am staying with friends; very, very good friends.  By my standard they are family.

I spend the night at their place and on the next morning, before heading out for the restaurant at noon to meet a business contact, I go for a long walk in the neighborhood. Nothing like a nice start in the morning.

I am meeting with a former colleague. Another one for whom I was the client. He and I have not spoken in over six (6) years. He found me, as it is increasingly frequently the case, on Linked In recently.

We connect just like before. In no time we are talking shop, potential business, mutual colleagues and I find myself excited and happy to share these topics with him. I feel energized; excited even to be thinking of potential business we could do together.

Again, I forget how far Quebec City is from Vancouver and mostly I forget to screen this against my “what do I want to do when I grow up” lenses. However, it is reassuring to see how quickly one can convince me already to get back to work.

It is hard to differentiate not wanting to go back to work with the need to take a break and regroup. At times, especially when you deal with these things on your own, the two become confused.

As we get ready to leave, I automatically reach out for my business card. Sigh! Discomfort. No business card.

How did I not think of getting some made? What would I write though? My name? My home address? I could write my fields of expertise…but I have not decided yet what I want to focus on….and I don’t want just a plain card. I want a pretty card. An interesting one. I will need to think of a design that would represent me, my business. Another thing on my list. I can feel my brain getting excited. Down Girl! For now, the napkin will have to do. To day 33.
