Work, life and things in between – Day 19: Week-end in Kelowna!

Work, life and things in between – Day 19: Week-end in Kelowna!

I thought I had a 9 am weight lifting class this morning and could not face the thought of rushing out the door.  How quickly we free ourselves from unwanted habits! Where I used to be up at 5 am for 5.30 conference calls, now I can’t deal with a 9 am commitment.  How smoothly I deal with frustrations will be my gauge of when I am ready to go back to work I am thinking.

At the moment, on a scale of one to ten, my ability to deal with frustration is somewhere around the minus 40!  And when I say frustration, I mean anything I don’t feel like doing.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not a spoiled brat, I am just someone who is tired and needs a break.  Someone who has been running on adrenaline and overdrive for quite some time.

So today, I can safely declare that I am not ready.  I call in to cancel my class.  After all I will be in Montreal for two of the five classes.  What is the point?  Turns out my class is not until Tuesday.

Really?  I am almost disappointed.  No reasons to cancel then.  So I will try again on Tuesday, see if 9 am feels better then.

I have a 3 pm flight to Kelowna today ( BC Okanagan valley) Where I normally call a cab, pay forty bucks and get to the airport within a half hour, this time I decide of course to take the sky train.  The $40 turns into $3.50 and it is so much more environment friendly.

I want my children to be proud of me you know!

This of course, was the intention, the reality ends up being that because I am so reluctant to work with a schedule, and I stretched packing up and getting ready until too late,   I therefore have to drive in.  Despite the fact that it does not meet my environmentalist goals, it is kind of fun to drive to the airport.  Never did it in five years.

I am visiting with my sister. Kelowna is not even one hour away of flying time and in three years of promising to go up “one of these week-ends” I never got around to it. So, I am thinking that I would start my sabbatical by making right by her.

The Okanagan valley is outdoors paradise and as if this was not enough, it is wine country.  However this week-end it is raining.  No matter.  We spend a lazy week-end, talking, reading, sleeping, going to the gym etc.  She is a few years older than me and as she shares her thoughts and realities I get a glimpse of maybe where I will be in five years.  It is a bit like peeking into the chapters ahead in your book.

Fast forward to retirement.

We are both empty nesters.  Her girls, she has two, now both live in Europe (it is her daughter’s wedding we attended in Nice).

My children all live in Montreal.  We both raised our children on our own and we are both adjusting to a life without them. There is more to sisterhood than meet the eyes you know!
